Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Athletes are granted the right to challenge specific rulings made by the official, mirroring the system already in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This development arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.
Case in Point
A recent example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its events.
Other Changes
Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was out or in.
Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
