Whenever a significant prize-giving event nears, there’s always a demand to include of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.
Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely that year
- Another creative title missed out that year
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
