No fewer than 13 people killed and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” declared the head of state.

The official reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its role in civilian works. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, defying forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked persistent questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party demanded an prompt suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "calls for immediate answers."

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these national initiatives.
