British Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of entry passages down to the facility... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action shows British leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of British forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their courage," Healey commented. "They were among thousands of British personnel stationed over the holidays. This operation, to remove militants who threaten our safety, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, following an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
