Administration Reveals Federal Worker Job Cuts as Shutdown Nears Three-Week Mark

Administration officials disclosed the initiation of government employee terminations on Friday, following through on earlier warnings in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the government’s process for letting employees go.

Although Vought did not specify which agencies were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that layoff warnings had been issued within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that staff reductions would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers confirmed that members at the Education Department would be affected by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Court Actions

Union leaders warned that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on public services used by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the actions in court.

“It is disgraceful that the government has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to illegally fire thousands of workers who provide critical services to the public nationwide,” said Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The AFL-CIO reacted to the news, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have declined to vote for a GOP-supported legislation to reopen the government unless it contains provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, indicating the deadlock is not expected to be resolved before then.

At a press conference, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, blasted Senate Democrats for rejecting the GOP bill, which was approved in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

“This is the last paycheck that 700,000 federal workers will see until Washington Democrats decide to do their job and end the shutdown,” Johnson said. Beginning shortly, American service members, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Last week, unions sought a temporary restraining order to prevent the administration from implementing any reductions in force during the funding gap. Additionally, a federal judge ordered the government to disclose details on termination strategies, impacted departments, and whether any federal employees had been brought back to carry out layoffs.

An analysis contended that a government shutdown limits the ability of the government to carry out firings, referencing official advice that acknowledged any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated before the shutdown began.

Impact on Workers

The layoffs occurred on the same day that government employees got only a incomplete payment for the final days of September but excluding the beginning of the current month, since appropriations expired at the beginning of the month.

A public service advocate, the president of the advocacy group, condemned the gridlock’s effect on government workers.

This is unjust to make federal employees suffer because our elected officials in Congress and the White House have failed to keep our government running,” Stier stated. “Our flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not at fault for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that lawmakers and top administration officials are still receiving salaries amid the shutdown.
